As content creators, we are constantly looking for ways to boost engagement, keep up with trends, and diversify our content from our peers. One of the most notable ways creators control their online brand is through visual storytelling. It is no secret that social media sites are heavily reliant on creating visual impact to increase engagement online. It is important that anyone interested in pursuing digital marketing familiarize ourselves with all the technology available to us and how it can be used to improve the quality of content. Good quality visuals can be the differentiating factor in a PR campaign's success.
Remember when all the OG youtubers shot their videos on DSLR cameras and edited on FinalCutPro? Today, visual storytelling on social media is more relaxed and values convenience. Within the past decade, the popularity of short form vertical video content has caused a major shift amongst the visual standards of social media content. Most social media creators and managers will completely plan, shoot, and edit their content from an iPhone. The iPhone camera quality has improved immensely so the industry has strayed away from using professional cameras as it would only add a step in the process.
Content creation technology also has trends of its own. While the iPhone remains the most popular, I have seen many gadgets come and go over the past few years. Recently, I’ve seen that content taken from vintage digital cameras, 35mm film cameras, and old camcorders have come into popularity.
All of this to say, there is no right or wrong when it comes to content creation. Different types of content might be better captured on a DSLR camera with professional editing software. It is important that we, the ones working in social media, can identify the type of content that would align the most with our client’s brand. As the industry continues to evolve, so will the demands of the audiences. Since visuals will always be important, here are five products on my wishlist to help optimize my social media content creation workflow:
iPhone: The all in one hub for content creation. I personally have an iPhone 15 and the camera is more than capable of capturing any professional content. The best way to ensure you are getting the most out of your device is to adjust the settings within your camera app before you start shooting.
RODE Lavalier Mics: These lavalier mics are affordable, compact, and a great way to elevate your content. Adding a microphone of any type is an addition to your kit. Great for recording voice overs and they can connect to your phone or a camera.
Octobuddy: The Octobuddy is a great inexpensive tool for influencers or social media managers. This product is so simple but is a convenient way to set up a camera angle.
CapCut: If you don’t already use CapCut, what are you doing? CapCut is a video editing application for IOS devices. They provide lots of templates, fonts, and versatility that make editing easier. Not having to export footage onto another device is also a plus.
Fujifilm X100vi: I listed this camera last because it is definitely the most pricey product on this list. It is more of a want than a need if I’m being honest. Within the last couple of years Fujifilm cameras have become more popular because they are able to mimic the look of film photography without the pain or cost of having to get it developed.
